Smart Step Range of Stepladders
The “Smart Step” is a reliable, custom-built hydraulic stepladder designed to fit most earthmoving equipment, or mobile machines, to give the operator safe access up or down the operator’s work station or cab. This durable and heavy-duty stepladder offers various practical functions and enables an operator to lower the step in an emergency, even if the machine’s main power is off or the motor is not running.
We’ve developed a PLC touch screen option for easy automation and for additional safety features.
Such additional safety features include:
- Automatic lifting of ladder if the operator releases the park brake of the machine
- Display on the PLC on whether the stepladder is up or down
- A “ground-level emergency stop” function that will automatically lower the stepladder to ground level
Various other add-on options are available and patented. These include features such as an LED light to illuminate the stepladder for safe access when using it at night or in poor light conditions.

Measurements
Our range of safety stepladders for machines and earthmoving equipment includes:
- Single link steps for small machines up to 1.5 metres high
- Double link steps for medium to large machines up to 3.5 metres high
- Triple link steps for large machines up to 4.5 metres high
General Features
The “Smart Steps” range of safety ladders has been subjected to and passed a range of performance testing in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and, where applicable, the Mine Health & Safety Regulations (Act 50 of 1991).
Please note that:
- Various test certificates including Load Test certificates / Patent Certificates – are available on request
- All components used for our “Smart Steps” range of safety ladders are laser-cut and machined on various CNC machines
- All links have sealed bearings for durability and low maintenance
- The Hydraulic package on our stepladders is driven by a 12/24 Volt AC electric motor
- The Varvel gearbox and Hydraulic pack is imported from Italy. Since February 2015, we’ve changed our gearboxes to Bonfiglioli, and the new power packs are from the USA
- Fully retracted our “Smart Steps” measures only ±0.5 m in length and when fully extended can be built to reach heights from 0.6 m up to 4+ m in length
Additional Safety Features
These include:
- 3-point contacts
- A safety limit switch that protects the stepladder when fully extended
- Numerous mechanical and electrical bypass features to protect the stepladder and machine operator whilst the machine and/or earth moving equipment is being operated
- Each “Smart Steps” ladder can carry up to 250 kg in weight
All “Smart Steps” ladders are currently manufactured, distributed, installed and maintained through Grammatikos Construction and Mining cc in South Africa.
